Perched above Zuma Beach near Malibu, California, multi-platform media influencer and former event planner, Camille Styles, worked with an experienced team to transform a 1950s beach property into a warm, organic-modern retreat designed around ocean views, premium materials, and thoughtful details throughout. The home is Sunset Magazine’s 2026 Idea House.

Originally envisioned as a vacation home for Styles and her family of four, the six-year renovation process took much longer than anticipated. In the intervening years, things changed and the family decided to make it their full-time residence.

The 3,100-square-foot house is sited on a nearly 29,000 square-foot lot featuring mature palm trees and a vintage swimming pool. Incredible views above Zuma Beach from most of the rooms in the house are what drew the family to the property in the first place.

Thoughtful choice of materials was important from the start of the renovation project. The project architect, Doug Burdge, has been designing homes in the Malibu area for 40 years and is familiar with everything that goes into making a house comfortable and safe.

Redwood pattern stock and redwood timbers from Humboldt Sawmill were selected for the exterior siding and trellis respectively. The redwood siding was finished with premium Benjamin Moore Woodluxe® wood stain in black to accent and highlight the natural grain of the wood, especially visible as the afternoon sun hits the house. The natural beauty of the redwood shines through the stain and gives the home a warm and welcoming glow.

Indoor-outdoor lifestyle is important to the family, so the inclusion of a large redwood trellis spanning the deck off the kitchen was in the renovation plans from the beginning. Left to weather naturally with no stain applied, the redwood trellis stands out beautifully against the stained redwood siding.
