Fjord is a floating sauna and plunge experience on the San Francisco Bay in Sausalito, California. Consisting of two traditional Finnish-style saunas that can each accommodate up to 6 people, the saunas are kept at a target temperature of 190F. Guests are additionally allowed to plunge in the Bay within demarcated plunge zones, though caution is required as the area is an active, public marina.
Fjord capitalizes on the simultaneously skyrocketing trends of heat therapy and cold plunges. Architecturally, it is a love letter to the Bay. Crafted from repurposed shipping containers and resting on a salvaged breakwater barge anchored to the edge of the dock, Fjord features an expansive redwood deck covering the barge, as well as redwood beams and slats for privacy from the nearby moored boats. Redwood benches on the deck allow for outdoor seating, particularly prized on sunny days.
Fjord’s owners ran through a gauntlet of entitlements to permit and construct the site but held fast to their vision of building a special place for visitors to connect physically to the Bay. The site’s design was intentional, honoring the environment and inspiring connection with the water. Redwood was chosen in part due to its low carbon footprint; the trees are grown and manufactured into lumber less than 300 miles from Sausalito. Additionally, redwood lumber is free from added chemicals or preservatives, allowing it to be used in an environmentally sensitive site like the San Francisco Bay.
Fjord’s popularity means bookings are coveted and sell out quickly. Those interested in enjoying this unique experience may visit This Is Fjord for booking details and availability.
