Creekside Center on the campus of UC Berkeley is the new home for the university’s Disabled Students’ Program (DSP). The new center was created from the renovation of the existing Dwinelle Annex, a two-story wood frame building designed by campus architect John Galen Howard and built in 1920 with two subsequent additions. The renovated building encompasses 8,800 gross square feet and provides DSP space to meet the specific needs of the community it serves, about 5,500 students on campus.
Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects (LMS Architects) of San Francisco oversaw the renovation, which focused on critical seismic and life safety improvements while also providing a more welcoming home for DSP staff and students, previously dispersed across other locations on the university campus. Located west of Sather Gate along Strawberry Creek, the project’s location required careful adherence to California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requirements.
Plant Construction Company, also of San Francisco, completed the renovation, the scope of which included new structural work, a new roof, new windows, interiors, HVAC system, elevator, entrance, and landscaping improvements. The project also included new wood framing and siding, with Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C013133) certified Humboldt Sawmill premium grade redwood uppers featuring prominently on the exterior siding.
The heartwood grade redwood board and batten profile replaced existing redwood siding that had been in service for many decades, a testament to the durability of real redwood. The redwood was prefinished on site prior to installation resulting in a beautiful, deeply hued look that showcases the natural variability in the redwood with some boards dark red and others somewhat lighter.
